Mar 05

I’ve been reading Profy a lot and some other sources to get my web 2.0 news. Recently I reached out to one of the Profy bloggers - David Wilkinson - to write something about Wallhogs. He was very helpful and, in the course of our discussions, I learned he was only *12 years old*! Frankly, his writing was so good and his interactions with me so professional, I couldn’t believe it. So he sent me this article from the BBC. I was so impressed I asked him to join us for an interview. Here goes:

How long have you been interested in blogging - what were some of your early reads?

Wow! I have to admit, I’ve not been in the whole blogging thing that long actually. I started in July of 2006, just as a hobby, a way of expressing my views and making them known. The idea came to me while I was weeding my back garden funnily enough. I thought that as a kid, people might want to see technology, gadgets, and the interview from my perspective. And it turned out that they did. I get thousands of views regularly now. My earliest reads? Truth be told, I don’t have a clue really… I think that Engadget may have been one of them, along with TheGadgetBlog.com and Gizmodo.

When did you start your first blog and is it still active?

My first blog was Techzi (http://globa-tech.blogspot.com) , (formerly known as Globa-Tech Today, formerly known as UK Technology Today). There’s a long story behind the name changes, but the previous two were long winded and tacky. Techzi ( http://www.tech.co.nr/) is staying, for good. Though I am planning to move a new Wordpress server.

Who are you blogging for these days and what blogs do you personally manage?

I blog for Profy.com as a Web 2.0 correspondent and I also write for several other blogs. I Guest Blog for b5media and TheBlogJoint.com and I have an internship at Gadgetell.com. I’ve had tonnes of blogs since July, but the only one I regularly update and focus on is Techzi.

How do research your technology trends that you write about?

I’ve got lots of contacts who alert me to things that might be of interest to me. In addition, I use a portal called Original Signal (http://www.originalsignal.com), which manages preset RSS feeds and streams them for me. It lets me select things easily to write about which may be of interest.

What are your predictions for what will be hot this year and in the near future?

That’s tough stuff, but from what I’ve heard of your own Repliqa, it sounds pretty promising. Anything that has an emphasis on community generally does very well when mixed with user generated content. I couldn’t pinpoint one particular service though. Thanks for the plug ;-)

What do your parents think of you blogging?

They really don’t mind! Their only concern is the amount of time I spend sat hunched infront of my computer though. They understnad it’s a great learning experience though and have supported me all the way, whenever I take on a new venture.

And how do you find the time to do it with having to attend school?

That’s the snag. Sometimes I get so tired, I just have to take a day off blogging. But my grades are great, my homework gets done at the moment, and I’m doing well with juggling school life with my personal life at the moment.

What are your friends like? Do they see you as famous?

Funny you should mention that. Nobody seemed to care until I appeared on BBC Radio Manchester, then national Radio. Since then everyone’s been asking me about blogging, and sending me e-mails asking how to create one. So I just reply with the URL, Blogger.com or Wordpress.com

Do you have other interests and hobbies?

All computer related really. Web design, blogging, hardware, gadgets, technology, the internet… I’m a self confessed geek.

Are you making any money blogging?

Yes, quite a bit actually. I could definitely live off $500 a month until I turn 14, by which time I aim to be earning more, by experimenting in Internet Marketing.

What advice can you give me and my readers to boost traffic to our blogs?

I’m kinda weird… I don’t really do anything to get traffic. I just blog! I dare say that MyBlogLog.com has helped, and because of my age, I believe most people find me off random Google searches. According to Google Analytics, 10% of my traffic is organic (stems from search engines) and an incredible 60% is from direct hits (people typing in my URL). The remaining percentage is made up of backlinks from various blogs and other websites.

This is just a great story. Thanks David.

David is also in the process of raising $5K to buy a server, update his blog, and replace Blogger with Wordpress. This young man has another $4.5K to meet his goal and I am hoping my readers will help him. There are a lot of rich guys reading my blog so shoot over to David’s Blog and make a contribution to help him out. I will match you dollar for dollar. Email me at mark.seremet {@} gmail. com and let me know what you contributed - I will confirm it with David and send him an equal amount. Let’s get serious and get this young entrepreneur his money by the close of business today.

Update - Dave’s blog moved to www.techzi.net
